Distance
from the center: 29 km.
Nearby beaches: Barra da Lagoa, Mole,
Joaquina.
Neighborhood: Rio Vermelho.
The
longest beach on the Island, also known as Praia Grande,
it consists of 7,5 km of soft, light colored sands,
almost untouched by mankind. Being part of Parque
Florestal do Rio Vermelho, a reservation of approximately
400,000m2 consisting of predominantly pine forests
and completely devoid of any construction. The landscape
becomes even more distinct with the dunes, dividing
the low vegetation and the ocean.
The ocean here is similar to Mole in that it is open
to the sea and the depth increases rapidly resulting
in 'dumping' waves. The water also tends to be quite
cool due to contact with the Falkand's Current.
The
reduced number of people in the area facilitates the
occurrence of break-ins and car theft. Be doubly attentive
especially during mid and low season.
