Located
about 42 km from downtown Florianópolis, Naufragados
beach is accessible via a trail which begins at the
end of Caieira da Barra do Sul, on a route rife with
beautiful sceneries.
Acess by sea is also possible, even though there are
no piers or waterfronts there, which forces visitors
to wade through the water for a portion of the distance.
The boats depart from Caieira beach.
The name Naufragados(Castaways) came from the sailors
that found refuge on the beach in 1753, when a ship
from the Portuguese Court heading to Rio Grande do
Sul ran aground during a storm.
The beach, with coarse sand and facing the open sea,
has two distinct characters: on the right coast the
sea is quite rough, while on the left the waters are
calmer and are very popular with fishermen.
Infrastructure is minimal, so it is recommended that
food and water be taken on excursions. The beach is
highy sought for fishing, trekking, and camping.
The island of Araçatuba is located immediately
off the coast and holds the Nossa Senhora da Conceição
de Araçatuba Fort, built in 1744.

- In the second half of the 19th century, a lighthouse
was built in Naufragados. Presently in ruins, the
location is worth the trip through the lovely sight

and the Fort.

trail at the beginning of the day, enjoy the beach
and return by boat at the end of the afternoon.
When
to travel
Definitions of high, mid, and low season:
- High season: from 12/24 to the end of Carnival.
Prices for food and lodging are generally raised.
Airplane and bus tickets should also be reserved in
advance. The city fills with tourists and traffic
is intense, making it dificult to access some of Florianópolis'
main beaches.
- Mid season: from November to 12/24; and from the
end of Carnival until Holy Week. Lodging prices are
generally cheaper if compared to high season. Temperatures
are pleasant and the city is less crowded. Traffic
flows better and it is easier to get to the beaches
and other attractions.
- Low season: from the end of Easter to October. Loding
prices are even cheaper than during mid season. It
is necessary to find out which establishments are
open, as some choose to close during the winter. Low
temperatures explain the nearly empty streets and
beaches, when compared to the rest of the year. Occasional
holidays and sporadic hot days however, rapidly fill
Florianópolis' beaches, both with the local
inhabitants as well as tourists from neighboring cities
and states - mainly Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná.
