Located
between the beaches of Daniela and Jurerê Internacional,
'Praia do Forte' beach is known for its wide, sandy
area and calm waters of a pleasant temperature. The
beach is named after the Fort of São José da Ponta
Grossa nearby. Built in the mid 18th Century, the
fort functioned as a vertex in the triangular defense
system of the 'Northern Bar of the Island of Santa
Catarina'. The fort was deactivated in 1935 and was
designated as 'National Artistic and Historical Heritage'
three years later. In previous times, the fort also
served as support for local fishermen.
Praia
do Forte is not a long beach. Its limits stretch from
the southern front of Ponta Grossa to a rock formation
that separates it from the headland. Access is by
means of a narrow, dirt road starting out from Jurerê
Internacional. On days when the tide is out, you can
walk along the stretch of beach which separates 'Praia
do Forte' from Daniela beach.
There are some bars and restaurants on the beachfront
that specialize in seafood. These are a good option
for those of you who would care to try some local
delicacies while spending a pleasant day with the
family. There is also enough space on the beach to
practice some sports if you wish.
