Anhatomirim
Island (indian name) located on Baia Norte (North
Bay) next to the mainland and is nowadays part of
the Governador Celso Ramos Municipality.
It's
strategic position - in the entrance of Baia Norte
- was responsible for Santa Cruz Fort construction
that, in the 18th century, was the third vertex of
a triangular defense system, formed by São José da
Ponta Grossa Fort and Santo Antônio de Ratones Fort.
This system should protect the northern coast of Santa
Catarina Island against the foreigners, mostly from
Spain, and consolidate the Portuguese occupation of
the south of Brazil.
In
1894, during the Federalist Revolution, this Island
was used as a prision and a base for shooting people
against the government of Floriano Peixoto (in Santa
Cruz Fort). In 1907, it belonged to the Navy Ministry
and it resumed as a prison at the end of the Constitucionalist
Revolution, in 1932. It worked as a Fort until the
end of the World War II, when the new warlike technology
made it obsolete as a military unit and then it was
closed.
In the south of the island there is a small beach
and a wharf for disembarkation.
The
access to the island is possible through the schooners
service, which leave from different places in Florianópolis
- mainly from Canasvieiras wharf, Beira Mar wharf
and under Hercilio Luz Bridge. You can also reach
the island in "baleeiras" (typical fishing boat propelled
by a centrally positioned engine)from these beaches:
Jurerê, Canasvieiras, Daniela and Fort Beach, located
in the north of Florianópolis and, also, from Antenor
Beach (in the mainland).
